Veggie Chips Vs Potato Chips

For many of us, veggie chips are a dream-come-true. They are crispy and salty like potato chips but made from vegetables. In veggie chips vs potato chips debate, have you ever wonder if they are indeed healthy?

Veggie Chips Vs Potato Chips

INGREDIENTS

The main ingredient in Veggie Chips is labeled as “potato starch”, which is a concoction of flours, powders, and other starches. These ingredients are just as highly processed as regular potato chips and do not contain the nutrients and fiber you’d find in the actual vegetables.

Speaking of vegetables, the most abundant ones in Veggie chips are a bunch of vegetable powders vs. in regular potato chips, they actually use real potato!

The types of oil varies based on brand. Popular brands of veggie chips use canola, safflower or sunflower oil (or a combination of these oils) which generally aren’t the BEST type of cooking oil to consume. As you can see, the word “veggie” in the label can be very misleading, so don’t be fooled by the title and make sure to read the back!

CALORIES

As for calories and fat, veggie chips are pretty much in the same ball park as potato chips. They are definitely a slight improvement from regular potato chips, but only a slight one.

In fact, the sugar & sodium levels are higher than in a normal potato chip. Also about one serving of 50g of potato chips equals 280 calories vs the same amount of servings of veggie chips equals 290 calories.

As you can see, there really isn’t much of a difference in caloric value. A serving of veggie chips isn’t a healthy substitute for fresh, frozen, or even canned veggies. Once the veggies are processed into chips, many of the vitamins and plant chemicals are destroyed. This basically leaves us with a food that’s much higher in calories and fat with fewer nutrients.

In conclusion, marketing has made us believe that “veggie” chips are healthy. My suggestion is, if you’re in the mood for a salty snack, chips of ANY sort can be enjoyed in moderate servings. Whether the label has “veggies” or not, excessive amount of anything will hinder your progress
